Trick or Treat for Your Dog - Healthy Dog Treat Tips

Hi Readers,

A month or so ago I sent an email called "Tips for Healthy Dog Treats". I got tons of emails from you saying you loved the ideas and you wanted more. So, I'd like to share a couple more ideas with you.

As you may recall, we talked about the fact that obesity in dogs is a major health concern. Canine obesity can lead to very serious health problems like diabetes, pancreatitis, arthritis and heart disease.

At the same time, dogs love treats! Last week, I gave you some suggestions for treats or snacks that included:

• Vegetables - Try some cooked green beans, carrots or peas. Many pets love them, and you can even mix them into their regular diet.

• For many pets, rice, popcorn and pasta are favorites. A bit of a rice cake or some air popped popcorn is a great healthy substitute for a high fat treat.

Here are a couple more ideas:

• You can give your dog some cooked rice that can be added for bulk to a weight control diet. It's a way of giving your pet more food without adding a lot of fat calories.

• Cooked pasta is also great. Many pets relish a few elbow macaroni or other plain pasta.

I hope these suggestions are helpful!

Until next time,

Dr. Jon

Understanding How Dogs Can Eat That

While dogs excel in the listening department, their sense of taste is a bit less refined.

This is certainly evident in some of the things they find tasty.

Compared to humans, dogs have approximately 1/5 the number of taste buds.

Perhaps this serves as an explanation for the little complaints we receive for feeding them dog food.

Discovering your dog's sensory levels, breed-related instincts, relative intelligence and comprehension is simply a start to understanding your dog.

Relationships between dogs and their human family are incredibly complex, however a little knowledge can greatly increase your understanding.
