Spring Is Here - What Plants Are Poisonous to Dogs?

Hi Readers,

Today is the first day of spring - a day that we welcome whole-heartedly after a long cold winter. With spring comes warmer weather and a ton of plants with the potential to be toxic to pets.  Some plant toxins can be very serious and others are fairly mild.

We all love plants, but we want to keep our dogs safe. So what's a plant-loving dog owner to do? Learn which plants are toxic and plant your garden with that knowledge in mind.

Check out our article: Outdoor Spring Plants - What is Toxic?
Go to: http://www.petplace.com/dogs/outdoor-spring-plants-are-they-toxic/page1.aspx

Even if your dog doesn't go outside that much or doesn't really bother your plants, it is best to avoid toxic plants that have the potential to affect your dog and others.

I'd recommend that you print this list and keep it handy.

Until next time,

Dr. Jon

P.S. When you are cleaning up your yard for spring, one tool that can really help is a doggy Pooper Scooper. It is very handy. We tested several and really liked this model by DogIt. It is plastic so all you have to do is hose it off, making it easy to clean. The two tools snap together making it convenient to hang outside or in the garage. It makes yard cleanup much easier. Check out this special offer. Go to: http://www.petproductadvisor.com/store/mc/dog-it-scoop-rake.aspx

P.P.S. Another VERY cool product for keeping your yard clean is the Doggie Doo Drain. This unique device attaches to your outdoor sewer input and allows you to flush your dog's feces. It is probably the neatest invention I've seen in years. In fact, I bought a couple and gave one to a friend who has a vet hospital. They leave it outside to help with daily cleanups.

Pet Photo Tip for Dogs

Pets have become part of our families and it only seems natural to include them in our family photos. Here are some tips to help you have the perfect pet and family photo.

First - start planning early.

Think about what everyone (including your dog) will wear? As part of your planning, consider what everyone will be wearing including your dog.

Consider your photo location. Most dogs can be happy having photos taken anywhere. However, some dogs can be nervous and prefer the comfort of your own home.

Is Your Dog Bored Out of His Mind?

Hi Readers,

A bored dog ... does that sound crazy? Well frequently both parents work away from home and the kids are at school. So, although dogs no longer have to battle the elements outside, they do have to contend with being home alone during the day, sometimes all day, with little to occupy their time.

What is a good pet parent to do?

Some pet owners like to leave a radio or television on for their dog when they leave. The "white noise effect" does seem to have a soothing effect and thus may have some redeeming features. Think of it this way; any lilting/melodic sound (not "heavy metal") or even just background gibberish is probably better than the sound of silence or a clock ticking on the mantelpiece. Most animals seem to prefer seeing images of other animals or nature programs.

Another good tip is to exercise your dog before you leave. Exercise generates serotonin in the brain and thus has a calming and mood-stabilizing effect on man and beast. A dog that has had a good run for 20 to 30 minutes before the owner departs will be less anxious, more composed, and prepared for a little R & R in the form of a good nap.

If your dog is alone at home for extended periods of time, take a look at the full article on this subject for additional tips: Dogs Home Alone

To learn more, go to:
http://www.petplace.com/dogs/dogs-home-alone/page1.aspx

Also please note that "Type-A" dogs may suffer extreme boredom and stress during their owners' absence.  While there is a well-known syndrome of separation anxiety, the bored dog scenario is distinct from separation anxiety and represents the sometimes ingenious attempts of a dog that is bored to find something time-filling to do.

My article Dogs Home Alone includes telltale signs that will show if you have a dog that is simply "bored out of his mind".

Take a look at the full article on this subject:

http://www.petplace.com/dogs/dogs-home-alone/page1.aspx

Go out and have fun with your dog.  Take him to the dog park, play fetch, dress him up and take pictures (he won't be bored, but he may be annoyed). Do whatever it is that you and your dog love to do together.

Until next time,

Dr. Jon

Trends in Dog Ownership -
Find Out What's New

Hi Readers,

The American Kennel Club (AKC) recently announced the top 10 breeds based on dog registrations in 2009. As before, the Labrador Retriever is still #1. However, if you look at it by city - the Lab is loosing a little ground. For example, the German Shepherd ranked first in Columbus, Detroit, Honolulu, Memphis, Miami, Providence and West Palm Beach. The Yorkshire Terrier, Bull Dog and Bull Terrier are tops in other cities. Find out the top breeds by city (it is pretty interesting!) - go to: http://www.petplace.com/dogs/top-dog-breeds-by-city-in-2009/page1.aspx.

From 1999 to 2009, there have been some interesting trends in dog ownership. For example, the French Bulldog has gone from #73 to #24. That is amazing. The Havanese went from 92nd to 32nd. For more information on the Havanese, go to:
http://www.petplace.com/dogs/choosing-a-havanese/page1.aspx .

To check dog preferences and trends in 2009, go to:

Until next time,

Dr. Jon
