National Kids and Pets Day – April 26th Is Here!

Hi Readers,

Kids and dogs are a great combination. In fact, one of the first thing dog lovers will look for in a pet is one who’s good with kids. Many families with dogs also include children. April 26th is National Kids and Pets Day and it’s a great time to celebrate these lasting and loving friendships.

Studies show that kids benefit from dog ownership just as much as adults do. Making sure the two interact well can take a little work, however. Read this article for valuable information: How to Keep Dogs and Kids Together

Dogs are wonderful helpers in special needs cases. Take this story, for example: a unique program brings dogs to children with autism  and it’s been a great success.  And therapy dogs can even help children learn to read

Kid's say the silliest things – and the silliest are usually about their pets. Here are some of our favorite witticisms from some of our young readers: Read all about it here

P.S. If your dog could speak, would they be embarrassed by some of the things you make them do? I’m talking the really silly stuff, like dressing them up in funny outfits? I’d love to see the pictures. Send them to photos@petplace.com...if your dog will let you!

TODAY'S PET TIP

Barking Dogs

The first step to stopping barking is to understand why it is happening. Dogs bark for all kinds of reasons, including anxiety, boredom and/or loneliness. Sometimes they bark just because it feels good.

Luckily, most dogs will respond to one or other intervention to curtail their barking. Whether you simply bring an outdoor dog inside or take the time to apply behavior-modification techniques, you can cause a dog to be less of a nuisance and to be more socially acceptable.

For more information, please read the story When Barking is a Problem.

Is Pet Insurance Right for You?

Hi Readers,

The economy has been tough for awhile, and especially now right after tax time people are trying to find new ways to cut costs and save money. I've heard some pretty far-out ones...things like making your own laundry detergent and stealing ketchup packets from restaurants. But today I'd like to talk to you about spending money to save money.

In these hard times it might seem frivolous to get health insurance for a pet, but is it? A lot of my readers have never heard of pet insurance before and have a lot of questions about it. I've put together some things that you should know about pet insurance in case you're curious.

If you're not sure about whether pet insurance is right for you, this article is full of information and can help you determine whether it's worth considering getting insurance for your puppy: Is pet insurance right for you puppy?

Did you know that 9 out of 10 veterinarians recommend pet health insurance? Those numbers might seem high, but that's really the truth.   Read this article to find out what the experts have to say on the subject

Of course, nothing can compare to hearing about real-life experiences. Here's a story from a dog owner explaining how having health insurance for their dogs has saved lives.

Our pets are our families; they not deserve the same care that we would give to ourselves. Getting pet insurance is a big choice to make, but one that could help save your pet AND your wallet in the future.

Until next time,

Dr. Jon

P.S. Here's one more story from a reader, this time telling us about an important lesson learned thanks to pet insurance.

TODAY'S PET TIP

Bread Dough and Dogs

Don't feed your dog bread dough.

When bread dough is ingested, it rises in a dog's stomach and as the dough ferments, alcohol is produced.

After ingestion, dogs will act nauseated, vomit, act painful, lethargic or become disoriented.

Should You Worry About Your Dog's Grass Eating Habit?

Hi Readers,

I receive a lot of calls from new dog owners (and some experienced ones) about dogs eating grass. Many dogs will take an occasional bite of grass while outside but their owners aren't sure if it's good for them.

Grass eating is a normal canine behavior, but how do you know when they're eating too much? Here is an article that explains all about your dog's grassy snacking

Some people think that dogs eat grass to induce vomiting. Others say that eating grass replaces loss nutrients, or just tastes good. What do you think? Test your knowledge of some common myths about canine behavior (I love articles like this!) at:  Old Wives Tales

Eating grass isn't the only naughty thing your dog can do when he's out in the yard. Some dogs also love to dig, dig, and dig. It can be a hard habit to break but, with patience and dedication, you and your pooch can get through it together. Read this article for more information: For more insight on the instincts behind this behavior, visit Dealing with Dogs that Dig.

Until next time,

Dr. Jon
