Do Dog Whistles Work? What's the Deal?

Hi Readers,

Never underestimate the power of TV - especially a crazy TV commercial.

Some TV commercials are so funny or memorable that they're all people talk about the next day - at work, at school, everywhere.  And after seeing this funny TV commercial, people were talking about it at their veterinarian's office!

It all started with that goofy Geico commercial.  Have you seen it on TV or heard it on the radio? It's about dog whistles.  The guy asks, "Do dog whistles work?"  Then someone tries blowing a dog whistle. You hear him blowing air into the whistle and ... nothing happens. Then you hear someone blowing air into the whistle again and dogs start barking.  After watching this commercial, a client's kid asked me if dog whistles really work or not and what's the deal.

Well, if you'd like to know more about dog whistles and whether or not they work, I have just the article for you. Go to: http://www.petplace.com/do-dog-whistles-work/page1.aspx

Here's another good question. Do you know why dogs chase cars? I also have that answer. Go to: http://www.petplace.com/why-do-dogs-chase-cars/page1.aspx

Enjoy - and I hope you learned a little more about dogs and their behavior.

Until next time,

Dr. Jon

What to Do if You Find a Dog

Many people are reluctant to take a found dog to the humane society or local animal shelter when found for fear the dog won't be reunited with its owner and be euthanized.

Does Spoiling Dogs Lead to Obesity?

Hi Readers,

I've seen statistics that anywhere from 40 to 60% of pets in the United States are obese. From my experience - it is probably pretty close to 50%.  Is your dog obese? Take our poll. Go to:
http://www.petplace.com/polls.aspx

Ironically a large percentage of pet owners do not see their overweight pets as obese. This is an entirely different topic (but a really interesting one). For an irreverent article about this topic, go to:
http://www.petplace.com/dogs/the-irreverent-vet-speaks-on-owners-that-think-their-dogs-are-big-boned

Then the question is - why? Why are there so many fat dogs and cats? Is it because pets are pampered? Pampering your pet is more popular now than ever. Jeweled collars, canopy beds, complete wardrobes, doggy daycare and gourmet treats are the norm for today's "spoiled" pets. All this pampering has led pets to start packing on the pounds.

I think many pets are pampered with treats and spoiled with snacks - which contributes to their obesity. No doubt about that.

Here is an article about the obesity epidemic in dogs. Go to:
http://www.petplace.com/dogs/obesity-epidemic-in-american-pets/page1.aspx

Here is also a good article about spoiling and obesity.
http://www.petplace.com/dogs/fat-dogs-and-cats-does-spoiling-pets-lead-to-obesity/page1.aspx

If your dog is obese, please consider a few less treats. The extra weight can really contribute to several health problems.

Until next time,

Dr. Jon

National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day - How About the Dog?

Hi Readers,

Today is "Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day".  This made me think about the number of people that give treats to their dog, left overs and even food from the frig when they clean it out. How do I know? Because I see many of these dogs come to the clinic. I'll explain in a second.

First, let me ask you if you give your dog table scraps. Take our poll and see how you compare to other pet lovers.

Do you give your dog food when you clean out your frig?

Pets don't need human food. They don't need table scraps. And left over food from the frig can be especially problematic. The problem is that some food just doesn't agree with dogs and it can cause vomiting and diarrhea. More serious problems such as pancreatitis can also occur.  Another problem is moldy food. For more information on moldy food, go to:
Is Moldy Food Toxic?    By the way, the answer is yes - but this article will give you more information.

Here are some tips on how to store your dog food. Go to:
http://www.petplace.com/tips-on-pet-food-storage/page1.aspx.

Until next time,

Dr. Jon

P.S. Is it safe to feed expired food? Find out. Go to:

Dealing with Excessive Barking

The first step to stopping barking is to understand why it is happening.

Dogs bark for all kinds of reasons, including anxiety, boredom and/or loneliness.

Sometimes they bark just because it feels good.

Puppies Thrown From A Car Window! What Would You Do?

Hi Readers,

Every once in a while you hear a story in the news about someone abandoning puppies - just leaving them by the side of the road.

What would you do if you saw someone throw puppies from a car window?
Take our poll .

I think I'd have to chase the car down and get the license plate number - then I'd worry about the puppies. Would you worry that they might be hit by a car - would you feel the need to stop?

What would you do?
Take our poll and feel free to leave your comments at the end.

Until next time,

Dr. Jon
