We love our dogs! But one thing we may not love is their slippery, slimy, slobbery DROOL! Drooling is typical for most dogs ... but excessive, consistent drooling could be a sign of these health issues:
1. Nausea - typically accompanied by licking the lips & vomiting
2. A swallowing disorder, which makes it difficult to eat & drink
3. Rabies - if the dog has not been vaccinated
4. A foreign body, mass or ulcer in the mouth that causes excessive mucous production
5. Medication - some medicines cause salivation as a side effect
6. Tumors in the esophagus and stomach - these are rare, but it does happen in a small percentage of dogs
7. Enlarged salivary glands - these ruptured glands cause swelling of the neck, cheek and tongue
8. Liver problems - if the liver is failing, toxins build up in the bloodstream The good news is that one of the most common causes of drooling isn't a health risk at all ... it's merely the dog's natural body reaction that helps him break down what he eats and drinks. And of course many breeds, like Mastiffs, Great Danes and Bassett Hounds tend to drool more than others.
Aside from wet slobbery kisses, a common complaint I hear from dog owners is that their dogs drool so much that it gets into their water bowl and all over the floor around it. I've come across a great product that can help minimize this problem for all of you big dog owners out there ... it's called the Big Dog Drinkwell Fountain.
The Big Dog Drinkwell Fountain is perfect for big dogs with big drool because it's virtually an everlasting fresh water supply. It holds more than two gallons of water with a flowing filtration system that keeps water fresher and cleaner for longer. And dogs love it because it runs just like a cool running faucet. Dog owners love it because it often results in less drool in the drinking water and on the floors. With this product, drool doesn't have to rule your dog's drinking bowl! For small dogs, I recommend the Drinkwell 360 pet fountain. It's a great way to encourage small dogs to drink more water. This fountain has up to five separate streams of running water. You can adjust the number of water streams and the flow level. The cool thing about this fountain is the unique 360-degree open design that lets pets drink from any angle. It constantly filters the water to keep it cool, clean and delicious. And it costs just a penny a day to operate! To learn more about the Drinkwell 360, go to: www.petproductadvisor.com/drinkwell360
P.P.S. Getting your dog to drink more water is one of the best things you can do to improve his health. These fountains were created by a veterinarian who wanted to help her own pets drink more water. Now your pets can enjoy the healthy benefits of these amazing fountains, too.
