October Isn't Just Halloween - It's a Special Dog Holiday, Too
Hi Readers,
Before it's too late, today I thought we should talk about the fact that October is Adopt A Dog Month.
I'm all for adopting dogs. There are millions of dogs waiting for good homes.
Once you make the decision that you want to adopt a dog, you need to be ready. Today, I want to give you some tips to help.
First, make sure that you're ready for this kind of a commitment. Make sure that you have the time, energy and money that you will need to give your dog the loving attention, nutritional food and sound medical care he needs. Once you decide that you are ready, here's what you need to do.
Get Your Home Ready
Dog-proofing your home is important and it can even be life saving. This includes making sure that your dog does not have access to any toxins such as rat poison, slug bait or antifreeze. Make sure trash is secure. Pick up clothing and small toys or other household objects that may be accidentally ingested by the new dog. Hide exposed electrical wires to prevent injury commonly caused by chewing on the cords. Keep all other dangerous items stowed away such as medications, poisonous plants and ashtrays. Check your fencing - is it secure? Are there any places in the fence that your new dog could get through?
Carefully think about these dangers and examine your home. It could save you a needless trip the emergency room.
Get Your Supplies
Next, make a list of all the things you will need for your new dog. You will need bedding, food and water dishes, food (find out what kind of food he's been eating), treats, a crate, safe toys, a toothbrush and toothpaste, a good leash and collar, grooming supplies and any pet-specific cleaners.
I have several more great suggestions to make this process as smooth as possible. Go to Your Ultimate Guide to Dog Adoption. If nothing else, print this article and stash it away in case you do decide to adopt. It has some really great tips to consider.
Until next time,
Dr. Jon
P.S. I've just got to share this video with you today. This is one of our favorite test dogs (she is owned by our editor's dad.) The dog's name is Sweet Lips and he will tell you about his adoption. www.petplace.com/SweetlipsAdoptionStory
