Does Your Dog Like to Cuddle?

Hi Readers,

Some dogs are sort of aloof, and others are lap dogs or real "cuddlers". What is it in their personality that makes them different? This is somewhat of a mystery.

What makes one dog standoffish and another dog extremely affectionate? It  probably has a lot to do with their genetic make-up as well as their socialization skills. Their breed and their socialization skills from an early age (both pet-to-pet and pet-to-human) all have an impact on a dog's behavior.

This makes sense when you think about people. Some families and cultures are more "touchy-feely" than others. Some people like to cuddle and others don't.

Why do some dogs like to cuddle? The reason a dog likes to cuddle with you or with his toys probably has a lot to do with both bonding and comfort. Puppies cuddled with their mothers and littermates for warmth, and undoubtedly this gave them comfort. Dogs that are submissive are often more apt to cuddle and be near their gentle leader.

Speaking of cuddling, I recently found a plush toy that is adorable. It is the Go Dog Lime Dragon. Our website "test" dog, Sweet Lips, that tests many of our pet products just loves to cuddle with this toy. She is a real terror on her toys at time but does like to cuddle.

The great thing about the Go Dog Lime Dragon is that it is more than just a cute cuddly toy - it is also extremely durable. It is made with a soft fabric that is held together with double stitching and "chew guard".

No toy is indestructible, but this toy held up very well to our tests. And we did some very fun extreme testing with it.

Check out this video and see what I mean:  Sweet Lips Attacks the Dragon.

Make sure any toy that you give to your dog to cuddle is also durable and safe. Supervise his play and make sure that he does not ingest any parts of the toy that can cause a life-threatening gastrointestinal obstruction.

Also, make sure you socialize your dog so that he is comfortable with lots of different people of different ages, sizes and nationalities. This will help your dog become a well-adjusted dog!

Until next time,

Dr. Jon

Puppy Chew Toy

Chewing is a natural behavior for puppies.

Teething, monotony and inadequate exercise can be contributing factors.

However, chewing behaviors can be directed toward inappropriate items, such as furniture, pillows and shoes. It is up to you to teach your puppy what is appropriate to chew on.

Offer your puppy a variety of chew toys.
