Tips for Keeping Your Dog Happy and Healthy

Hi Readers,

What is the best way to keep your dog healthy? I get this question all the time.

Well, it just so happens that I've got some great tips to help you keep your dog happy and healthy.  Here they are.

1. First, have your veterinarian do an annual wellness exam to make sure your dog is healthy. Dogs age much faster than humans and their bodies can quickly change over the course of a year. Your veterinarian is trained to look for abnormalities during a physical examination that may suggest a problem. And when problems are diagnosed earlier, they are usually more successfully treated.

2. Vaccinate. Make sure your dog is up to date on all vaccinations. Vaccines that protect against common diseases are an important part of keeping your dog healthy. Prevent the preventable!

3. Keep your dog on a leash. Many dogs are injured, poisoned or they can get into the trash and ingest something harmful when they are running free ... and all of these things can cause life-threatening problems. Keep control of your dog.

4. Make sure your dog is on a good parasite prevention program. Fleas, ticks and other parasites can really annoy a dog and may cause medical problems. Preventative treatments such as K9 Advantix® offer protection against pesky pet parasites. The formula repels and kills ticks, fleas and mosquitoes, plus it kills lice and repels biting flies. K9 Advantix® is effective for dogs and puppies seven weeks of age and older. For more information, go to:

5. Give your dog plenty of love and attention. Pet and talk to your dog daily. Brush them regularly to keep them well-groomed and free of matted hair.

6. Consistently feed your dog a good quality premium food. Good nutrition is key to good health.

I hope these tips help keep your dog happy and healthy!

Regards,

Dr. Jon

TODAY'S PET TIP

How to Apply Topical Medication

Administration of topical medication is quite simple but it requires your dog to remain still for a brief time. The medication needs to be placed in an area that the dog cannot lick.

Hold the applicator upright and snap off the tip to allow the medication to flow out of the applicator.

Hold your dog still. Your dog can be standing, lying down or even sitting. Just make sure you have access to the necessary area.

For flea and tick products, read the instructions on the medication to determine if the manufacturers recommend applying in one area or multiple areas.

Place the tip of the applicator through the hair and place directly against the skin or against the wound.

Squeeze the applicator until all of the medication has flowed out of the applicator. Try to avoid application of the medication on the hair.
