Hyperactive Pets Anonymous

Hi Readers,

No, this is not a real organization, but frisky pets just seem to be a group all on their own, don't they?  What's more, when you have spunky pets, you too can feel a bit estranged from the rest of the pet owner world.

After working a long, hard day you come home to a ransacked house with draperies on the floor, clothing scattered everywhere, glasses tipped over or broken, papers ripped to shreds, and scratches and teeth prints in the furniture.  You may think, "What's up with my pet?  Why MY pet?  Why can't he just behave while I'm out?"

You are not alone.

There are many pet owners who are living with hyperactive pets or pets that have random frisky moments.  Frisky behavior is quite normal for our pets and often happens when they are bored.  They can also get a bit jittery when they're scared or nervous...just like us.  So here are some tips that may help:

1. Refrain from scolding and chasing your pet if you've caught him after the fact.  Many pets may not remember far back enough to connect the scolding with what they have done.  Catching them in the act is the best time to let them know that their behavior is unacceptable.

2. Reward your pet with a treat anytime he shows good behavior.

3. Spend time with your pet each day - perhaps for exercise or for play.

4. A healthy pet can learn good behaviors.  Be sure to keep your pet on a healthy diet so that his bones, muscles and brain can continue to develop.

5. Give him some toys. This way he has a few things to keep him busy while you're gone.

6. Help your pet to relax. A great way to do this is by massaging him and playing relaxing classical music.  This can help soothe both you and your pet - when you come home to a mess, or when the both of you just need to unwind.

Finally, I'd like you to check out the
Music My Pet CD.  It's an extraordinary compilation of classical music that has already relaxed so many pets and their owners.  If your pet is frisky this CD is the ultimate musical pet therapy.

This CD is the perfect way to help keep your dog calm and relaxed during Halloween trick-or-treating. With an endless parade of noisy children coming to your door, even the best-behaved pets can get pretty wired. Don't let the stress get the best of your dog. Isolate him in a separate room where the Music My Pet CD can be playing to keep him calm and relaxed. With the Music My Pet CD, Halloween will be a much more enjoyable holiday for both of you!
